Friday Update: Sept. 16, 2016 (Week 2)

Good afternoon Chieftain Families!
It’s been a great second week at Utica High!  I wanted to send out the first of my Friday Weekly Updates.  I will continue to post these to our website as well as my Blog.  Anytime an update is sent, I will send a reminder out through the UCS App as well as Facebook and Twitter!  If you haven’t downloaded that to your iPhone or Android phone, I would highly recommend it!

As of next Tuesday, our schedules will be set and balanced and class changes should be minimal, if at all.  We made a major change this week when Ms. Lorincz stepped back into a very familiar role as Student Council Advisor.  When I started teaching at Ike, Ms. Lorincz was the setting the bar for Activities Coordinators in the district and around the state.  She’ll continue that work here at Utica High which required a change in her fourth hour class.  I apologize for that inconvenience.  With that, she and the Student Council will begin rolling out information on Homecoming next week.  The theme this year is Night on the Nile, and the tickets are $25.  Guest Applications are available in the main office, or can be downloaded via the Website by selecting  the "Calendar" and then going to the "Homecoming Dance" event on Oct. 8.  Students wishing to bring a guest should remember that all guest applications must be received by Wednesday, Oct. 5 and only guests meeting the stipulations on the application will be considered.  We will continue our tradition of our Competition Assembly during the first few hours of the day on Monday of Homecoming week as well as the incredible events and parade that come with it!
Our new webpage Calendar is an incredible tool that I hope all students and parents become familiar with over the coming weeks.  The calendar items contain documents in some cases and are downloadable to your device calendars.  You’ll see that you can change the view to daily, weekly, monthly and yearly to get a perspective as to when events are occurring.  Within the calendar, there are sub-calendars that can be selected under the “Categories” tab.  We’re still adjusting the categories, but I hope you’ll find the access to information to be helpful!  The Calendar is replacing our Weekly Notes this year.  Those will not be produced our sent out, as all of that is going into this one location.  You can see a preview of the next five school events on the right hand side of the main webpage.
We have a busy week coming up!  Open House is next Thursday, September 22, at 7pm and will begin in the Auditorium. The evening will begin with comments from our Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Mr. Robert Monroe and I, and will release you to your student’s courses.  You should be able to access a copy of your student’s schedule via PowerSchool.  Maps will be available for your students to bring home next week.  I will also send them out in a reminder Email.  In addition, our college visits start up next week.  Students can sign up for College Visits via Naviance and should sign up the week prior.  If a student misses that sign up and wishes to attend, they should see their counselor as soon as possible to secure permission.
Please keep an eye out for our Utica Marching Chieftains tonight and tomorrow throughout our community.  Members of the Utica High School Marching Band will be playing in front of local businesses around Utica and Shelby Township on September 16 and 17.  As you are “out and about” shopping and dining you may come across small herds of students with their instruments.  Do not be afraid.  These mini herds are called ensembles.  They will be most thankful if you toss some change in their band hats/buckets.  The Color Guard will also be participating.   Tag Day is a fun way to entertain, connect with the community and raise money to support the Marching Band.
Looking ahead, we have also set our Fall Parent Teacher Conference dates! Fall Conferences will be on Tuesday, November 15 from 4:30 – 7:30 and on Thursday, November 17 from 12 – 3 and 4:30 – 7:30. Thursday November 17 is a half day for all secondary students.  Good luck to our Football Team at Anchor Bay this evening, and we hope that you all have a great weekend!

Best regards,

Tom Lietz
Principal
